Call of Duty: World at War is a first person shooter game and with the tagline of ‘Feel the Chaos of War’ you can predict what effect it will give you. The Activision superhit franchise is back after their blockbuster Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, which broke many, records of gaming world. Call of Duty: World at War is developed by California based Treyarch and will be the fifth installment in the series. Like most of the Call of Duty games, this is also set in World-War era, but instead of featuring the European battles, it will focus on the Pacific and Eastern area. Many historical battles are included battle of Iwo-jima, Makin Island raid, Battle of Peleliu, Battle of Stalingrad, the Battle of Okinawa and Battle of Berlin. Best feature of the game is the co-op mode, which can support up to four players online and two offline. Leveling system, which was first, featured in Call of Duty: World at War is back. You can unlock addition weapons and rewards as you progress through the game.
Call of Duty: World at War is considered more mature than the previous installments in the series. There are multiple ways of completing objectives, making it an open-end game. AI’s helping the player are back once again, they will help you clearing rooms, providing cover fire and shooting down enemies. Weapons are of typical world War era these have been seen in other games of Call of Duty franchise like Thompson submachine gun, the Mosin-Nagant rifle, and the Panzerschereck anti-tank rocket. You will gain access to these weapons according to your progress in the game. However, you can only carry up to two weapons only; weapons from dead soldiers can also be picked.
In a single player campaign, you have to control three characters from a first person prospective. The roles you have to assume are Private Miller from 1st Marine Division of U.S. Marine Corps and Private Dimitri Petrenko of the Red Army. Campaigns of both the players start differently, Private Miller starts from being captured in makin islands and later on freed by Corpal Roebuck. He then continues in the U.S pacific campaigns ending at Castle of Shuri Okinawa. Same way Private Dimiti Petrenko also starts acting dead to save himself from German Army, and three years later, he is fighting in Reichstag and finally plants the flag of the Soviet Union on the Reichstag. The third character Petty officer Locke, a weapons operator on PBY Catalina is only playable in the mission “Black Cats.” His squadron makes a strike on Japanese merchant vessels.
It took Treyarch around two years to develop Call of Duty: World at War, double the time that of previous title Call of Duty 3. The enhanced version of the game engine of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is used in the game, with some improvements in physics model. Environments are more destructible and can be set on fire with a flamethrower. For realty, a full sized replica of PBY Catalina was constructed for the game. The first trailer of the game was released on Xbox live Marketplace on June 21, 2008 and later was available for PSN. Beta version of the game was introduced on October 28, 2008. Those who are members of the Call of Duty official website were given codes, which allowed them to download beta version of the game.

Just like the previous games of the franchise, it received awesome reviews. Currently holds 86% score for Xbox 360 and 85% for PlayStation 3. Teryarchs decision of taking the world war games to Pacific was applauded. The addition co-op mode was also praise as it makes game playable repeatedly. Adding multiplayer option to the single player option was the best step as it makes world war era games best in the genre. The darker, grittier portrayal of the world war in the game was complemented as well-worn source material. Dialogue’s of characters of Sgt. Reznov and Sgt. Roebuck are also well acted. For its best features and other qualities, it got many awards like best shooting game 2008 for Wii.
