
Orion’s Belt is an upcoming game in very rare browser game genre. Originally, it was started by two Portuguese students as their Bachelor’s degree. Main theme of the game is to mange several planets and grow his empire battling other players. It will also allow players not only to fight against each other but with Bots also. It’s a free web browser game.
First Beta version of the game was released in October 2003 for a few Portuguese players, mainly from a Portuguese gamedev web community. It was supported by SourceForge.net and launched as open Source Project. Orion Belt drew its inspiration from famous games like Master of Orion and Heroes of Might and Magic. Despite technical limitations and hosting difficulties, game started it grow in popularity. It was later reviewed in June 2005 by the Portuguese TV channel RTP2 in the famous Quiosque magazine. After that, several Portuguese game related magazine and sites published interviews with the developers, increasing the game’s popularity.

There are two distinct competitions in Orion Belt: the round and tournaments.
The Round
In an Orion Belt round the players starts from his Home Planet and has to expand. Two different aspects for the game are listed: the combat and the planet management mode. There are several buildings, research, and combat units: the objective is to make the planets production as high as possible, to be able to manufacture many combat units. Automatic battle resolutions are not included in the game. instead of that, every battle is fought on a complex board game style, with units on a square grid. Each round can last for six months. Game is restarts when a round ends.
The Tournaments
In Tournaments, players are given a fleet with a predefined set of units and have to battle through the available competition. The tournaments battles are also called as Orion’s Belt Elo rating system. There are several types of victory conditions with different systems.
1. Toatal Annihilation – the objective is to eliminate all enemy units.
2. Domination - the objective is to control board places to earn points.
3. Regicide - the objective is to eliminate a special flag unit.
