First announcement for the game dates back to February 2006. That time Nuclear Dawn was set to be an amateur mod for the Source engine like may other games. Later in April 2009 it was revealed that the game is now a commercial project, but it will still use the Source engine as the game engine and will be aimed for the PC users.

Playing as a commander will complete the RTS part of the game. The commander play will be an objective-based gameplay and will stress on coordinating tactics. Other than leading the soldiers the commander will be assigned with the job of expanding your territory using well-placed structures that will help your team in the battles. Development of the game is going on a war level. However it was not the same as the game suffered a prolonged development cycle and many media sites criticized the game calling it a vaporware.
